Water Under the Bridge: How to Combat Scour Problems
Township Engineer - 1/4/2010
Pennsylvania is known as one of the most flood-prone states in the nation. Townships in the northeastern part of the state, especially, are still dealing with extensive infrastructure damage that several floods over the past few years have left behind. Pennoni's Jeremy Colello, PE, discusses how flooding has led to many bridge failures, often due to scour, or erosion of the soil around the bridge foundation. These failures have forced townships and the state Department of Transportation to develop emergency construction or rehabilitation plans, while residents, school buses, and delivery trucks struggle to find alternate routes to their destinations.
