On behalf of The Norwood Company, Pennoni Associates performed geotechnical engineering services for the construction of a 150,300 square foot, one-story addition and an additional parking area that includes 314 trailer storage spaces to the Advanced Auto in the Arcadia West Industrial Park. Pennoni had previously provided engineering, inspection, and testing services at this site. The project scope included determining subsurface conditions, evaluating these conditions with respect to the proposed construction, and presenting recommendations regarding foundation alternatives and floor slab support. These evaluations included: design bearing values and frost depth, ground water conditions and a requirement for drainage, reuse of on-site soils for compacted load bearing fills and compaction criteria for support of foundations, floor slab, and pavements, soil parameters for estimating lateral earth pressures to design below-grade walls, seismic design requirements, subgrade preparation, and presence and potential for rock removal difficulties. Pennoni also performed construction monitoring and materials testing services during embankment construction, foundation subgrade preparation, the placement of reinforcement steel and concrete for foundations and floor slab, and the erection of steel including the roof decking.
