In October 2009, the Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA) honored Pennoni Associates as part of the project team for its work on the newly constructed Samuel A. Ramirez Building. The award given was the Design ’09 Housing Award of Merit.
Working for client Architectural Precast Inc, Pennoni provided specialty structural engineering design and detailing of a ribbed architectural precast façade on the nine-story building, located in the historical district of New York City, Tribeca.
The project combined the area’s historic nature with its residential presence through careful planning. The team used thirteen different precast window radii to match the 9-story structure's surrounding architecture. Dark red precast panels, designed with protruding fins reminiscent of turn-of-the-century warehouse architecture, provide a historic flavor to the building. The top floor features a row of smaller radius windows on fluted precast panels capped with a wide cornice, designed to be aesthetically compatible with the top floors on nearby buildings. With little room for a large crane and a 15-minute delivery window, the erection of the project took only two weeks.
Four floors of the multi-million dollar precast structure are home to the corporate headquarters of Samuel A. Ramirez and Company, Inc., one of the largest municipal bond underwriters in the United States. The other floors in the building contain a mix of upscale residential and commercial space.
In total, over 110 pieces, or 12,000 sq. ft., of precast was used to preserve the essence of Tribeca's historic past.

Chad L. Aside from its Philadelphia headquarters, Pennoni has Pennsylvania offices in Bethlehem, Doylestown, King of Prussia, Mechanicsburg, Scranton, State College, Monroeville, Uniontown, West Chester and Wilkes-Barre, PA.
The Best Places to Work in PA Program is made up of two groups of companies: 50 medium-sized (25-250 employees) and 50 large-sized companies (251 employees or more). Through the research process, a survey is sent to both the employers and employees from hundreds of companies from across the Commonwealth. Winning companies achieve the highest combined scores in a twofold evaluation: review of a company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics (25%); and results of an employee survey to measure the employee experience (75%). Based on these measures, Pennoni, has consistently been ranked in the large category list.
The Best Places to Work in PA listing was created in 2000 by a public/private partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Team Pennsylvania Foundation, Central Penn Business Journal and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Pennsylvania, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses.
Pennoni will receive its official ranking at a special event to be held on December 1, 2009.

Pennoni Associates is pleased to announce the public opening of The Cool Spring Park Plaza, a $23.4 million rehabilitation project located on the West Side of Wilmington, DE. Pennoni provided final design and construction management of the park.
For more than 130 years, the plaza area was the site of two open-air reservoirs that could hold 40 million gallons of treated water. They were replaced by a 10,000-gallon tank under the new plaza.
Including the planning phase, the project took nearly a decade to complete. Greg Rishel, Wilmington Civil/Site/LA Project Manager, led the Pennoni team. The gala dedication ceremony showcased the new park, which includes an open lawn, a circular promenade with room for small concerts and similar events, and a shallow pond with a fountain. A 20-foot-wide, 48-step "grand staircase" connects the plaza with Cool Spring Park, along Jackson Street just west of I-95 near Pennsylvania Avenue. The two parks total 12.5 acres.
The new plaza is fenced and open for community use from dawn to dusk. The gates are locked at dusk, but the plaza remains lit, and the fountain operates until 10 p.m. There are two walking paths in the new plaza. One is on the outer border, just outside the fencing, and measures four-tenths of a mile. An inner ring stretches for a quarter mile. The new plaza and the adjacent Cool Spring Park run from Jackson to Franklin streets and from 10th Street to Park Place.

Ahmad Faqiri, P.E., Pennoni Associates Transportation Senior Engineer, recently presented a technical paper at the International Bridge Conference (IBC) 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. Titled “Chesapeake City Canal Bridge Back to Its Fatigue Safe State,” Mr. Faqiri discussed Pennoni’s three-phase study (load testing/instrumentation, finite element models, etc.) to find root causes of arch span of the Chesapeake City Bridge.
Mr. Faqiri’s presentation highlighted Pennoni’s comprehensive approach to finding a solution for rehabilitating the Chesapeake City Canal Bridge, including testing, analysis, design, and construction consultation. These key aspects of the project resulted in an effective bridge repair that made the floorbeam connection angles of the Arch Span of the Chesapeake City Canal Bridge fatigue safe indefinitely. The Bridge is a two-lane steel structure carrying U.S. Route 213 over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Owned and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the bridge is nearly a mile long, with its main tied-arch structure spanning 540 feet.
Mr. Faqiri has over sixteen years experience as a bridge-team supervisor, project manager and project engineer. He is the Project Manager and Engineer specializing in bridge design, experience with the design and construction of numerous bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction projects. For the seventh year in a row, Pennoni Associates, headquartered in Philadelphia, has been ranked on the Best Places to Work in PA list. This year, Pennoni was ranked as number 21.
