Traditional Power Plants
Traditional power plants are classified based on the type of energy product they are producing. The common types are:
- Electrical generation
- Steam generation
- Cogeneration or combined electrical and steam production
The plants are also classified by the type of fuel used to generate the electricity/steam product. They are:
- Coal fired
- Natural gas fired
- Petroleum fired
- Nuclear fired
These plants provide electricity and/or steam to municipalities, homes, business and industrial facilities. In all cases, the primary technology is to convert water into steam. The steam can then be delivered to the user as is or be used to power a turbine to generate electricity. In all types of plants the major issues are:
- Water quantity, quality and wastewater discharge
- Cooling water quantity, quality and wastewater discharge
- Air emissions
- Nuclear by-products generation and handling in nuclear power plants
With the increased demand and environmental pressures facing the traditional power industry at this time, the need for enhanced designs, improved and more efficient operations and greater attention to all aspects of permitting and environmental issues has never been greater. In order to meet the present and future challenges faced by the traditional power industry, Pennoni Associates has the background and experience to address most of the needs of the industry. From site plan development to infrastructure design, environmental impact, water, wastewater and air emission permitting for new facilities to plant process audits, facility upgrade designs and implementation, design and upgrade of existing boiler water, cooling water and wastewater treatment systems, Pennoni Associates has demonstrated the unique ability to tailor their service package to our clients custom needs.

Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
It has been estimated that Americans generate trash at an astonishing rate of four pounds per day per person, which translates to 600,000 tons per day or 210 million tons per year. In an effort to accommodate the amount of waste Americans produce daily, municipalities and private sector companies across the country have begun to build and rehabilitate landfills. As a premiere consulting engineering firm in the region, Pennoni Associates has worked on various landfill projects throughout the Mid Atlantic Region. From environmental impact studies to rehabilitation and re-use, Pennoni’s team of experts helps clients provide disposal of waste in the safest and most sanitary manner possible.
Telecommunications Planning
Wireless communications are rapidly making landline communications obsolete. The popularity and everyday use of wireless communication devices is staggering. The demand on wireless carriers to meet the FCC mandate of seamless coverage is greater than ever. Changing technology requires constant updates in carrier networks.
Pennoni’s planning team has the depth and talent to keep up with the rapid pace and volume of applications that these forms of land use generate and require. We are well versed in the unique body of case law that defines the statutory criteria that apply to wireless applications and in the technical requirements of the various carriers.
Telecommunications Planning services include planning analyses and expert testimony, photo simulations, and design.
