Diamond Honor Award - Glanraffan Creek TMDL Remediation
American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) - 2009

Pennoni received the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) 2009 Diamond Honor Award in the Environmental Category for the Glanraffan Creek TMDL Remediation project. The award, which is the highest in its category, was given during the a special banquet held at Hotel Hershey.

Working for the Township of Lower Merion, Pennoni’s Philadelphia Water/Wastewater Division, led by Evan Andrews, P.E., provided the groundwater seep passive treatment system design to remediate the Glanraffan Creek Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) to meet the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. As a result of Pennoni’s work on this project, the Township of Lower Merion was able to reduce the high level of iron in the water through the construction of a seep water collection system that discharges into a pond. The water is then aerated by flowing over a cascade into a holding pond before eventually flowing through constructed wetlands for final polishing into Glanraffan Creek. The creek itself is small and flows through a narrow wooded area before reaching the Schuylkill River.

Diamond Certificate Award- Main Street at Exton
Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (CEC/PA) - 2003

Pennoni Associates has received the 2003 Diamond Certificate Award from the Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (CEC/PA) for the consulting engineering services provided for the Remedial Investigation /Risk Assessment/Cleanup Plan Land Recycling And Environmental Remediation Standards Act (Act 2) Commercial Development Site at Exton, PA. The CEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economic welfare of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

Pennoni, on behalf of Wolfson-Verrichia Group, provided comprehensive environmental engineering consulting services at a former industrial and agricultural light commercial site located in Exton, West Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Redevelopment of this property needed to factor in existing environmental conditions. Pennoni developed a site-specific remediation plan that integrated the site redevelopment with the environmental cleanup. The redevelopment of this property has resulted in increased jobs, tax revenues and economic growth for the community.

Distinguished Award - Nipper Building
American Council of Engineering Companies New Jersey Chapter (ACEC/NJ) - 2005

Pennoni Associates recently received the 2005 Distinguished Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies New Jersey Chapter (ACEC/NJ) for design work done on behalf of the Delaware River Port Authority for the Brownfield Redevelopment of the Former RCA Building 17. The ACEC/NJ 2005 Engineering Excellence Awards program recognizes the best of the engineering and land surveying projects in the State of New Jersey.

Pennoni’s Environmental Technology was hired by the Delaware County Port Authority to complete a Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation/Remedial Investigation for the former RCA facility and develop a Remedial Action Workplan under oversight of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to remediate this former industrial facility to residential standards. Pennoni’s investigation and reporting of the environmental remediation on the Nipper Building enabled Dranoff Properties to secure the necessary funding to purchase and renovate the building, converting it into the viable and tax-contributing entity that it is today.

Pennoni’s experience in remediation technologies includes soil stabilization, soil removal and disposal, UST removal and management, bioremediation, in-situ air sparging, chemical oxidation, cometabolic degradation, air scrubbing, hazardous materials abatement, pump and treat, vapor extraction and waste management.  We routinely apply this knowledge in assessing solutions to our clients’ needs and optimizing a design to minimize remediation costs and achieve a practical and efficient result that is acceptable to each regulatory agency.

Brownfield Redevelopment

Recent trends have steered development away from  wooded and agricultural land, toward the recovery and reuse of vacant and abandoned urban and suburban sites known as Brownfields. Pennoni Associates has a team of experienced  environmental, civil and chemical engineers, geologists, and environmental scientists able to  perform services necessary for Brownfield redevelopment, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments for Due Diligence, Phase II soil and groundwater investigations, remedial alternative analyses, and remedial design and implementation for in-situ and ex-situ remediation of soil and groundwater.

Pennoni has a working relationship with area regulatory agencies and vast experience with regulatory programs such as the Pennsylvania Land Recycling and Remediation Standards Act (Act 2), New Jersey’s Technical Requirements for Site Remediation and Industrial Site Recovery Act (ISRA), and DNREC’s voluntary cleanup program.  We perform the necessary investigations, determine the applicable cleanup standard and remediation strategy, as well as, submit the required reports and administrative paperwork to obtain a release of liability or no further action determination for a site, an important step in Brownfield redevelopment.

Karst Geology

Karst geology includes those rock formations that experience dissolution that is caused by permeation of acidic waters through the subsoil into the rock.  The phenomenon is most widely associated with carbonate rocks including limestone and dolomite.  These rock types are widely found throughout the Northeastern United States.  In the areas underlain by carbonate rock, the question is not “will a sinkhole occur?” but “when and where will a sinkhole occur?”

Pennoni’s professional staff of geologists and geotechnical engineers has significant experience with the exploration and stabilization of active sinkholes.  Sound technical and cost effective approaches are provided by our staff to develop long term stability for our client’s interests.  Each situation is evaluated on an individual basis.  Our goal is to remediate once while minimizing costs to our clients.
